Lewis Hamilton won the championship for the fifth time in a row after the 19th race in the US in this year’s Formula 1 (F1) Championship on January 3 (local time) to reach the title record of the legendary Michael Schumacher.
At the Grand Prix, Hamilton did not have a complete celebration when finishing second after teammate Valtteri Bottas in the Mercedes team. However, with Bottas himself 67 points (381 compared to 314) on the driver’s table, Hamilton soon won the championship before two races (each win had 25 points).
This is the sixth F1 world title of the 34-year-old British racer after 2008, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018. This impressive achievement helps Hamilton to close to the record of German legend Schumacher, who was the F1 champion 7 times. Hamilton’s brilliance also helped the Mercedes racing team continue to dominate the F1 racing village as the 6th consecutive season champion.
Hamilton parked his Mercedes in the reserved for champions area before jumping into the arms of family and friends. “I could not believe it, thank you very much. Today’s tough race is really hard. Valtteri (Bottas) did very well. As an athlete, I feel that I’m enjoying the happiness of winning the championship. We will continue until the end of the season”, Hamilton said happily after the fifth time dominating F1.
Meanwhile, although sharing the joy with his excellent teammate, Bottas said he did not give up to head to the highest position in F1 racing. “My father told me when I was six or seven I never gave up and that was the family motto. I personally have failed my goal this year, but Lewis deserves it. He has had a good season”, the Finnish driver shared after the fourth time on the top podium this season.
Hamilton’s joy was also frustrated by Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari. After dominating F1 racing village with 4 consecutive championships (from 2010 to 2013), the German driver is considered a force to move towards the records of compatriot Schumacher. But since then, Vettel has been decelerating when looking at his crowned rival Hamilton.
After the US race, this year’s F1 will continue with the last 2 races in Brazil and UAE.
